Antique (1885) first-edition hardcover book North and South by Mrs. Gaskell | Elizabeth Gaskell. Printed by Smith Elder UK.

Hardcover first-edition book from the home library of English Scholar Henry Fisher Cox. Book is complete at 432 pages plus advertising pages at the back of the book. NO! dust jacket. Embossed covers, sewn-in binding.

About the author: Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, often referred to as Mrs Gaskell, was an English novelist, biographer and short story writer. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of the many strata of Victorian society, including the very poor and are of interest to social historians, as well as lovers of literature. Some of Gaskell's best-known novels are Cranford (1851–53), North and South (1854–55) on which the famous TV series from the mid 1980s is based and where Patrick Swayze and Kirstie Alley got his their starts and Wives and Daughters (1865).

Synopsis: Gaskell's third novel and along with Cranford one of her better known on which a BBC miniseries was made. North and South is the story of Margaret Hale. When Margaret's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience, Margaret is uprooted from her comfortable home in Hampshire and moves in with family to the north of England, a much different life than that lived in the South. Initially repulsed by the ugliness of her new surroundings in the industrial town of Milton, Margaret becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of the local mill workers and develops a passionate sense of social justice. This is intensified by her tempestuous relationship with the mill-owner and self-made man, John Thornton, as their fierce opposition over his treatment of his employees masks a deeper attraction. In North and South, Elizabeth Gaskell skillfully fuses individual feeling with social concern, and in Margaret Hale creates one of the most original heroines of Victorian literature.

Condition: In VERY GOOD! antique condition and complete. Covers show light wear and rub about the corners. Spine and and sewn-in bind are intact with NO! separation of pages from the sewn-in bind. There is stress to the bind at the front and back covers and there are a few penciled annotations to the margins in a few places in the book. There is also a name, brief inscription and date (Christmas, 1885) penciled into the front overleaf of the book. The embossed covers are clear and legible. Interior pages show MODERATE! foxing | yellowing for their age. Some of the pages show small spots of water damage to the edges. NO! dog-eared corners in the book. Text is clear and legible. Please review each of the posted photos for a complete visual of the item.

Of particular interest to antiquarian book collectors, the book contains a bookplate from Henry Fisher Cox, Woking Surrey to the inside front cover. Mr. Cox was well-known in his community and was the son of the rector of Luccombe. A scholarly man who studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, Cox had made a special study of early 19th century literature, especially Hazlitt and Blake, and subsequently became editor of the Examiner, a weekly paper of liberal orientation and to which John Stuart Mill was a contributor. He gave much thought to the improvement of the agricultural labourer and wrote a book on the subject that achieved a degree of contemporary importance. He then, rather surprisingly, in conjunction with a college friend opened a firm of stockbrokers in the City at 29 Threadneedle Street. This copy of the book comes directly from the home library of Henry Fisher Cox.

Wonderful, very scarce antique first-edition book sure to be a treasured component of any classic, home library!
